The PlayStation 5’s internal storage fills up fast, and a compatible M.2 SSD is the cleanest way to keep your whole library installed and ready in 2026. The right drive loads games at full console speed and, crucially, includes or accepts a heatsink so it stays cool in the tight expansion slot.
Sony sets firm requirements for PS5 storage: PCIe Gen4 speeds, the correct M.2 2280 size, and a heatsink to manage temperatures. Miss any of those and the console will warn you or throttle the drive. Below we cover exactly what to look for, then review the SSDs that pass with room to spare.

Watch: Best M.2 SSD For PS5 2026 — Video Review
How to Choose a PS5 M.2 SSD
- Read speed: Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read. Drives like the WD_BLACK SN850P and Samsung 990 PRO comfortably clear that bar, ensuring games load at full PS5 speed.
- Heatsink: The PS5 slot runs hot, so a heatsink is mandatory in practice. Choose a drive with one pre-installed, such as the SN850P or Lexar NM790, to avoid buying and fitting one separately.
- Capacity: 1TB is the practical minimum given modern install sizes; 2TB is the sweet spot for keeping a large library ready. Match capacity to how many games you refuse to delete.
- Form factor: Only M.2 2280 (Gen4) drives fit the PS5 expansion bay. Double-check the size before buying, as shorter or longer modules will not seat correctly.
- Officially licensed vs standard: Licensed drives like the WD_BLACK SN850P are validated for PS5, while quality standard Gen4 SSDs with a heatsink also work well. Either is fine as long as it meets Sony’s specs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What SSD specs does the PS5 require?
A PCIe Gen4 M.2 2280 drive with sequential reads of at least 5,500MB/s and a heatsink for cooling. Every drive on this list meets or exceeds those requirements.
Do I really need a heatsink?
Yes. The PS5’s expansion slot lacks its own cooling, so a heatsink prevents thermal throttling. Choosing a drive with one pre-installed, like the SN850P, saves you the extra step.
Is 1TB or 2TB better for a PS5?
2TB is the sweet spot for keeping a large library installed, while 1TB suits players who rotate a few games. Given how large modern titles are, most owners will appreciate the extra 2TB headroom.
Will a licensed drive load games faster than a standard one?
Not meaningfully. Licensing guarantees compatibility, but any quality Gen4 drive meeting Sony’s speed spec loads games at the same full console speed. Pick based on price, capacity, and heatsink.
Final Thoughts
The WD_BLACK SN850P is our top PS5 SSD for 2026 thanks to official licensing, a fitted heatsink, and true plug-and-play simplicity. Choose the Samsung 990 PRO for peak performance, the Lexar NM790 for the best value at 2TB, the Corsair MP600 PRO LPX as a proven console-tuned option, or the fanxiang S660 to expand on a budget. Confirm Gen4 speed, the 2280 size, and a heatsink, and your library will always be ready to play.
